The L979U is compatible with most major brands of garage door openers manufactured after 1993 that use photoelectric sensors near the base of the garage door track, making it one of the broadest-compatibility wireless keypads in the LiftMaster lineup. It is also compatible with most LiftMaster gate operators, commercial door operators, and external receivers.

For LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and Raynor openers with a white LEARN button, the L979U supports full myQ app integration: PINs can be managed remotely, temporary guest PINs can be issued by number of hours or number of openings (1 to 255 for each), and battery charge level is visible in the app. For LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and Raynor openers with yellow, purple, orange, or red LEARN buttons, permanent and temporary PINs can be programmed directly from the keypad without the app. For all other compatible brands, programming is completed using the opener's program button following that brand's programming mode procedure. The One Button Close feature is available exclusively with LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, and Raynor openers with white, yellow, purple, orange, or red LEARN buttons.
