A Guide to Fire Safety in Access Control Systems

A Guide to Fire Safety in Access Control Systems

Ensuring First Responders Can Always Get Through

Automated gates and access control systems are an essential part of securing residential communities, commercial facilities, and industrial sites. But security that keeps unauthorized people out also has to let authorized emergency responders in. When fire, EMS, or police need access, every second matters.

This guide covers the primary categories of emergency access devices available through Elite Gates, how each one works, and which applications they are best suited for. Whether you are a property manager, contractor, or HOA board member evaluating your current setup, understanding these options will help you make a confident and code-compliant decision.

Fire Department Access Boxes

The most common and widely required emergency access solution is the fire department access box. Mounted near a gate operator or intercom, these boxes give first responders a direct way to trigger gate access without needing a code, remote, or assistance from the property owner.

When emergency personnel arrive, they open the box using a method determined by the box type (padlock removal, Knox key, or an ace cylinder) which activates a built-in relay wired into the gate operator's control board. The gate opens immediately.

There are three primary fire box configurations available through Elite Gates:

Standard Padlock Fire Box

The most straightforward option. The fire box is secured with a padlock, either installed by the property owner or provided by the local fire department. When responders need access, they cut the padlock or use their master key, which triggers the built-in relay and opens the gate.

These boxes are simple to install: mount near the gate operator, run a pair of wires to the control board, and you are done. They work with virtually any automated gate system.

A popular option in this category is the Access One FLB100:

  • Access One FLB100 Fire Box Ready for Padlock - Universal design fits both Knox locks and padlocks, built from vandal-resistant steel with a high-visibility fire-red finish. Built-in relay activates gates or doors when the padlock is removed.

Knox Lock Fire Box

Knox lock boxes are designed to work with the Knox KeySecure system, which is a master key program used by fire departments across the country. Fire departments that participate in the Knox program carry a master key that opens any Knox-equipped box in their jurisdiction, giving them immediate and secure access without cutting any hardware.

Because Knox keys are tightly controlled by each fire department, this system offers a higher level of security than a standard padlock box. Note that Knox locks must be purchased directly through your local fire department and are not available for retail sale.

The Eagle EFB-2010 is a well-suited option for Knox-compatible installations:

  • Eagle EFB-2010 Fire Box (Knox Lock Ready) - Designed to accept a Knox KS-2 key lock, with a secondary ace cylinder lock as well. Built from 14-gauge steel with a weather-resistant red powder coat and bold "FIRE DEPT." labeling.

Important: Always consult your local fire department before purchasing a Knox lock box. Knox lock compatibility and key issuance policies vary by jurisdiction.

Chain Pull Fire Box

The chain pull fire box is a specialized option designed specifically for chain-driven sliding gates. Instead of a relay wired into the control board, this box uses a mechanical chain release mechanism. Responders open the padlocked box and pull the included chain, which physically disengages the gate and allows it to slide open manually.

This is particularly useful in situations where a hardwired electrical connection to the gate operator is not practical, or where a fully mechanical backup method is preferred alongside other access systems.

The Eagle EFB-2070 is the go-to product for this application:

  • Eagle EFB-2070 Fire Box (Chain Pull) - Chain release mechanism included, secured by a standard padlock. 14-gauge steel construction with red powder coat and bold "FIRE DEPT." labeling. Designed specifically for chain-driven sliding gates. Note: 1/2" EMT conduit for the cable is not included and must be sourced separately.

Important: The EFB-2070 is designed for sliding gates with chain-driven mechanisms. Confirm compatibility with your gate operator and local fire department before installation.

Sensor-Based Emergency Access Systems

For installations where a physical key box is not preferred or where additional automation is desired, sensor-based systems offer an alternative. These devices detect emergency vehicles automatically using sound or light, and trigger gate access without any manual interaction required.

There are two main sensor types available:

Siren-Activated Sensors

MMTC SAG-M Siren Activated Gate Opening Sensor

The MMTC SAG-M listens for emergency vehicle sirens and automatically triggers gate opening when a siren is detected. It is designed to distinguish between siren frequencies and everyday background noise, rejecting standard sounds while responding reliably to actual emergency sirens.

Key features include:

  • Works with all gate and door operators
  • No codes, remotes, or keys required
  • Comes with a 4" x 5" reflective sign to notify responders of the system
  • Operates on 12-24VAC/DC with a simple 2-wire connection

Strobe Light-Activated Sensors

Tomar Strobeswitch Emergency Vehicle Access Kits

Rather than listening for sirens, the Tomar StrobeSwitch detects the specific strobe light patterns emitted by emergency vehicles. Using digital frequency discrimination, it ignores ordinary lighting like flashlights or headlights and responds exclusively to authorized emergency vehicle optical emitters.

Elite Gates carries the Strobeswitch kits in three configurations:

  • Single-Zone Kit - one sensor with power module, for a single gate or barrier entry point
  • Dual-Zone Kit - two sensors, suited for dual-lane gates or combined entry/exit setups
  • Triple-Zone Kit - three sensors, ideal for multi-lane or wide-area entry points

All kits pair one or more 1790-1014 Strobeswitch sensors with the 1790M-2 Power Module. The system activates within one second of detecting an authorized strobe signal and integrates directly with gate operators and barrier arms.

Click2Enter: Radio-Controlled Emergency Access

If there is a single product that represents the gold standard in emergency vehicle gate access, it is the Click2Enter system. Click2Enter eliminates keys, codes, and remotes entirely by using emergency responders' existing two-way radios as the access credential.

The concept is straightforward: when an emergency vehicle approaches a gate, the driver keys their standard radio transmitter. That radio signal, which operates on FCC-restricted public safety frequencies, activates the Click2Enter unit and opens the gate. No stopping, no exit from the vehicle, no delay.

Because only authorized agencies are permitted to transmit on these frequencies, the system is inherently secure without requiring additional credentials.

Key Advantages

  • Works with virtually all gate operators, bollards, roll-up doors, and barrier arms
  • Compatible with VHF and UHF analog and digital radios used by fire, EMS, police, and border patrol
  • Dual verification process ensures only authorized transmissions activate the system
  • Mutual aid compatibility for interagency coordination
  • Programmable latch-open feature allows specifying gate open periods from one minute to unlimited
  • Durable and weather-resistant construction for long-term outdoor performance

Click2Enter is particularly well-suited for gated communities, city-owned infrastructure, and any property where compliance with local emergency access mandates is required.

Fire Door Release Devices

In addition to gate access, fire safety compliance often requires provisions for pedestrian doors and internal access points. Elite Gates also carries fire door release devices, which are electromechanical systems designed to unlock or release doors automatically in response to fire alarm signals, heat sensors, or manual override.

These devices are commonly used in commercial buildings, multi-unit residential properties, schools, and any facility with code-regulated egress requirements.
