For years, adding a hands-free exit to an automatic gate meant cutting into the driveway, laying loop wire, sealing everything back up, and waiting for it to cure. It works, but it also means more labor, more mess, and a permanent cut in the pavement.

Wireless vehicle detection gives you another option.

A battery-powered sensor detects the vehicle and sends a wireless signal to a receiver connected to the gate operator. To the operator, it works much like a traditional wired loop. The difference is that there is no loop wire to bury and, in many cases, no reason to cut the driveway at all.

Here is how these systems work, where they make the most sense, and how to choose the right setup.

How Wireless Vehicle Detection Works

Vehicles contain a large amount of steel, which changes the magnetic field around them as they move through an area. Wireless vehicle sensors use a magnetometer to detect that change.

When a vehicle enters the detection zone, the sensor sends a wireless signal to a paired receiver. The receiver then activates a relay connected to the gate operator, telling it to open, hold open, or perform another programmed function.

Some models also use short-range radar. The magnetometer detects the vehicle, while radar helps confirm whether the vehicle is still sitting over or near the sensor.

It sounds complicated, but from the gate operator's point of view, the result is simple: vehicle detected, relay activated.

Exit Mode vs. Presence Mode

AES e-Loop sensors can be configured for different jobs depending on the model and installation.

  • Exit Mode: Detects a vehicle approaching from inside the property and sends a pulse to open the gate. No remote, keypad, or button is needed.

  • Presence Mode: Keeps the relay active while a vehicle remains in the detection area. Radar helps confirm that the vehicle is still there before the gate is released.

  • Parking Mode: Similar to Presence Mode, but with slower latch and release behavior designed to reduce battery use.

Presence detection can be especially useful when a vehicle may stop near the gate, but it is important to understand what it does not do.

These sensors detect vehicles, not pedestrians. They can help prevent a gate from closing while a vehicle is still in the area, but they do not replace the UL 325 entrapment protection required by the gate operator, such as photo eyes and safety edges.

Think of vehicle presence detection as an additional layer, not the primary safety system.

Why Wireless Detection Has Become So Popular

The biggest advantage is obvious: less work in the driveway.

  • No trenching or traditional saw cutting: Wireless detection is especially attractive for pavers, decorative concrete, finished driveways, and other surfaces you would rather not disturb.
  • Faster installation: Some in-ground units can be installed in under 30 minutes, while post-mounted versions may take less than 15 minutes.
  • Long battery life: Depending on the model, settings, and traffic volume, some sensors can operate for years before the battery needs attention.
  • Secure wireless communication: AES systems use encrypted communication and protection against replay attacks.
  • Made for outdoor installations: IP68-rated housings help protect the sensor from water, dust, and changing weather conditions.
  • App-based setup: Compatible e-Loop products can be configured through the e-Loop app using Bluetooth, making adjustments and diagnostics easier in the field.
  • Good fit for solar gate operators: Because the sensor itself runs on batteries and the receiver uses very little standby power, wireless detection can work well with many solar-powered gate systems.
  • Fault monitoring: Compatible receivers can alert you to problems such as low battery or lost sensor communication. Depending on the setup, the system can also be configured to hold the gate open if communication is lost.

Understanding Range: There Are Really Two Different Numbers

One of the most common questions we hear is, "What is the range?"

The answer depends on which range you mean.

Vehicle Detection Range

This is how close a vehicle needs to be before the sensor notices it.

Magnetometer sensitivity can usually be adjusted to change the size of the detection zone. With AES sensors, settings can provide detection zones of roughly 20 inches, 3 feet, or 5 feet depending on the application.

Models that use radar can also monitor a short area around the sensor to help determine whether a vehicle remains present.

Post-mounted sensors work differently because they look sideways across the driveway rather than sitting directly in the vehicle's path.

Wireless Communication Range

This is the distance between the sensor and its receiver.

AES systems can communicate up to roughly 165 feet under appropriate conditions, with optional antenna solutions available on some receivers when additional range is needed.

These two measurements are easy to mix up. A sensor might detect a vehicle only a few feet away while still being able to communicate with a receiver hundreds of feet from the sensor.

Choosing the Right Sensor Style

There is no single best mounting style. The property usually makes the decision for you.

  • The AES e-Loop Mini is a compact surface-mounted option that works well for residential driveways and smaller commercial entrances.
  • The Commercial e-Loop is designed for busier entrances and shared access points.
  • The Light Industrial model is larger and built for heavier-use locations such as warehouses and distribution facilities.

Whichever version you use, placement matters. Install the sensor where vehicles consistently pass through its detection area, keep it away from high-voltage wiring and other sources of interference, avoid areas that regularly flood, and recalibrate the sensor if it is moved.

One Receiver Can Handle More Than Just the Exit Sensor

One of the useful things about the AES system is that the receiver can become a small wireless hub for the gate.

The compact single-channel receiver supplied with many kits can pair with multiple sensors along with compatible wireless keypads, triggers, and remotes.

That means you could have a wireless exit sensor, another sensor used for presence detection, and AES remotes all communicating through the same receiver connected to the gate operator.

For more complex installations, AES also offers multi-channel receivers that can control separate relays.

A two-channel receiver can be used for applications such as directional detection. Two sensors can determine which direction a vehicle is traveling so the gate only responds when the vehicle is heading the intended way.

Larger receiver options also support more remotes and additional communication features for commercial installations.
